3 alternative theatres in Barcelona with an unrepeatable stage proposal
Barcelona is a city brimming with cultural plans for all tastes, which, of course, includes a varied theatrical offer. Outside the commercial circuits, small alternative theatres survive - and in many cases, revive - with different productions in which creative freedom rules above all else. The small size of these theatres - most of them have no more than 50 seats - contributes to a much more intimate and real feeling for the spectator. Without a doubt, enjoying a play in one of these artistic spaces is a unique and emotionally charged experience. Check out these three alternative theatres in Barcelona!
1. Sala Flyhard
This is one of the most popular independent theatres in the city. With its own production company, Flyhard Producciones, this space located in the Sants neighbourhood is strongly committed to the works of contemporary Catalan artists. Some of the productions that have triumphed on its stage are Smiley: una historia de amor (“Smiley: a love story”), by Guillem Cuba, and Sapiens, by Roc Esquius. The quality and authenticity of its works have earned the Sala Flyhard two MAX awards and three Butaca awards.

2. Tantarantana Theatre
Located in the Raval neighbourhood and filling seats since 1992, Teatre Tantarantana is a benchmark venue in Barcelona’s alternative theatre scene. Founded in the Born district by Julio Álvarez and Víctor Suárez, the theatre moved to its new location to expand its seating capacity, which is currently distributed between two rooms: Baixos 22 and Àtic 22. Among the plays being performed these days are BFF, a story about mourning the end of a friendship by Círculo Barcelona, and Esto no es Jamaica (“This is not Jamaica”), by Teatre Kaddish, a story about the daily life of a group of people who arrive in El Prat dreaming of a better future.

3. Cincómonos Espai d’Art
Not academic, but with a lot of heart, this small art space with a capacity for 50 people has been open since 1998. It hosts productions of all kinds, monologues, a theatre school and a variety of artistic shows in which creativity and fun on stage are at the forefront. You can find it in the Eixample district.
